Lionsgate’s “Midway” gets the surprise box office win this weekend, taking in $17.5 million.
“Midway” is a 2019 American war film centers on the Battle of Midway, a clash between the American fleet and the Imperial Japanese Navy which marked a pivotal turning point in the Pacific Theater during WWII. The film, based on the real-life events of this heroic feat, tells the story of the leaders and soldiers who used their instincts, fortitude and bravery to overcome the odds. Directed by Roland Emmerich, who produced the film with Harald Kloser, and written by Wes Tooke, the film features an ensemble cast, including Ed Skrein, Patrick Wilson, Nick Jonas, Mandy Moore, Luke Evans, Aaron Eckhart, Dennis Quaid, Tadanobu Asano and Woody Harrelson.
The movie beat out “Doctor Sleep“, which only brought in $14.1 million on 3,855 screens to come in second place.
“Joker” is inches away from crossing the $1 Billion mark after only six weeks in theaters, the global box office total of “Joker” is now $984.7M with $621.2M from offshore markets.
