This workout is in memory of Chicago Police Officer Ella French, who died in the line of duty on August 7, 2021. She was shot and killed while she and her partner were conducting a traffic stop on a vehicle carrying three people near West 63rd Street and South Bell Avenue.
One of the subjects opened fire during the traffic stop, striking Officer French and her partner. Despite their injuries, the officers managed to return fire, injuring one of the subjects. Officer French was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center after both officers were taken there. Her partner was admitted to the hospital in critical condition.
According to NBC Chicago, French is the first female Chicago police officer killed in the line of duty since 1988. Officer French had been a member of the Chicago Police Department for almost three and a half years and was assigned to the Community Safety Team.
